Banks and Saving banks in Ireland
Irish coins and banknotes are issued by the Central Bank of Ireland, since 2003 named Central Bank of Financial Services Authority of Ireland. Besides this central bank, Ireland counts with the Bank of Ireland, one of the “Big Four” existing in the country, a commercial bank that supports financial operations in Ireland. Another banks composing those mentioned “Big Four” is the Allied Irish Banks (AIB), the National Irish Bank (NIB) which is now owned by the National Australia Bank and Ulster Bank, this last one has its headquarters in Belfast, but it provides financial services within the whole republic and the Isle of Man.
Another important banks operating are ACC Bank (now owned by Rabobank), mainly focused on agriculture and funding small and medium sized companies; Irish Life & Permanent is the main bank providing personal financial services, it has a strong position regarding pensions and retail banking, in which it has an strategic position.
It is important to say that Ireland is now having troubles due to the financial crisis, and that's the reason why some banks have reduced their functions in the last few years. That's the case of Postbank Ireland, which services are not available in post offices and its accounts have been closed.
